several companies have struggled due to lack of funding or customer troubles

A123 Systems posted a wider-than-expected fourth-quarter loss this month after Fisker, one of its largest customers, cut battery orders. Bright Automotive, an Indiana electric Acer UM08A31 Battery commercial truck start-up, closed its doors in February after failing to get a federal loan.

WTO members are supposed to notify the trade body regularly of their subsidies, but U.S. and EU officials say China has not filed any Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery notifications in over five years, making it hard to gather enough information to challenge unfair competition.

“This is a very important win for us,” said an EU trade official. “Normally you should have transparency that allows you to act through litigation. But now it’s in reverse.” The Boeing case Dell Inspiron 6000 Battery and the related case against Airbus together represent the biggest trade dispute in WTO history and are a reminder that the arguments are not always about China.

A number of top national retail chains, including Kohl’s and Walgreen, have begun installing charging stations at their stores, bu t critics HP HSTNN-IB17 Battery say the U.S. push for electric cars has come before such infrastructure is in place, weakening the case for consumers to be attracted to the technology.

But since the bankruptcy of Solyndra, a solar panel maker that received $535 million in U.S. loan guarantees, federal support for advanced vehicle technology programs has Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery ground to a halt. Ind ustry officials and analysts point to tightened U.S. Department of Energy requirements in the face of withering criticism from Republicans about the Obama administration’s generosity for anything related to green technology.

GM, which recently launched a new advertising campaign centered on testimonials by adoring Volt owners, has made the car the centerpiece Sony VGP-BPS2C Battery of efforts to seize from Toyota the mantle as the world’s greenest automaker. Meanwhile, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has estimated pure electric vehicles like the Leaf will make up 10 percent of industry global sales by 2020.

Building more electricity links between Britain and its neighbouring markets could be an answer to managing its growing renewable energy output which is hard to Apple A1175 Battery predict and cannot be stored, a manager at National Grid said on Tuesday.

Interconnectors to continental Europe and Scandinavia can help balance Britain’s electricity system when renewable energy Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery production, such as wind or solar power, exceeds demand levels. Meanwhile, several companies have struggled due to lack of funding or customer troubles.

China will exempt import duties on a wider list of “key technical equipment”, in a further step to shift manufacturing to strategically important industries such as cleaner and Dell WR050 Battery higher-tech sectors in the world’s second-largest economy.

The new 54-page product list drafted by the Ministry of Finance and the customs administration is longer than the existing 38-page list, adding new products from online water Acer TravelMate 6292 Battery quality testing systems to tomato harvesting machines.

The number of Palestinian rocket attacks dropped sharply after the ceasefire went into effect overnight, and no major towns in Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS Battery southern Israel were targeted. The Israeli military said six projectiles had hit, causing no casualties, and that there had been no Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip.

Previous ceasefire deals after earlier rounds of fighting have often got Dell Latitude D620 Battery off to a slow start, with guns gradually falling silent within a day or two.Gaza’s Hamas Islamist leadership has kept out of the fighting and seemed eager to avoid a larger conflict with Israel.

The number of Palestinian rocket attacks dropped sharply after the deal took effect overnight, with less than 10 rockets reportedly fired since then. In a further sign of a return to normality, towns and cities in southern Israel announced plans to reopen schools that had been kept shut for the past three days.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled Israel’s commitment to the deal, while warning of a strong response to any violations. “Our message is that quiet will bring quiet,” Netanyahu said in a Jerusalem speech. “Anyone who violates it or even tries to violate it, our guns will find him.”

Copper tracked overnight losses in Asian markets. Shanghai shares sustained their biggest one-day loss this year after Premier Wen Jiabao doused expectations of any near-term easing of measures in the country’s property sector, a key consumer of the red metal.

British electronic parts distributor Premier Farnell said strong emerging markets demand and increased market share would see it return to growth this year after it posted profit below expectations in a tough global industrial sector.

Premier Farnell, which in July issued a profit warning after sales were hit by the global economic slowdown, said adjusted pretax profit for the year to Jan. 29 was 88.5 million pounds ($138.8 million), down 1.3 percent on last year and below a consensus of 90.7 million in a Reuters poll of 14 analysts.

“The Karma performed exactly as it was designed to,” Tom LaSorda said in a letter sent to customers. “The onboard diagnostics detected a fault and entered a protection mode that shut the car down to protect other components. We are sorry for the inconvenience this caused the customer.”

“We expect this ceasefire to continue but we cannot be sure so our forces…are ready to continue if it will end up being necessary,” Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, visiting southern Israel, told reporters. A Karma that Consumer Reports purchased for $107,850 died on March 7 during speed calibration testing.

“It was quite a successful round,” he said, citing the deaths of 20 militants among the 25 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks and what he termed the “impressively effective” Iron Dome rocket interception system.

The anti-missile batteries destroyed dozens of incoming rockets, but the barrages disrupted normal life for more than a million Israelis in the south, forcing schools to close and people to run for cover when sirens sounded.

Previous ceasefire deals after earlier rounds of fighting have often got off to a slow start, with guns gradually falling silent within a day or two. In this case, militants fired nine mortars and rockets in the hours after the deal took effect, causing no damage or injury.

A rocket struck harmlessly after nightfall near the city of Ashkelon, shattering a six-hour calm but provoking no immediate response. Israel has not launched any air strikes at the Hamas-ruled coastal territory since the deal was done.

Tappin was accused in a 2007 three-count indictment of scheming to export the batteries to the U.K. without a license. Court documents show that a Acer UM08A31 Battery cooperating defendant provided computer files that demonstrate Tappin intended to then send the batteries to a Tehran-based company and that he and the cooperating defendant had illegally sold U.S. technology to Iran in the past.

Dr. Garry Gardner of the AAP told a congressional committee last week that his group is “interested in working with the Consumer Products Safety Commission and industry to require secure Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery closures for devices that need button batteries as well as appropriate packaging.”

The IAEA summarized its information last November in a 13-page document drawing on 1,000 pages of intelligence. It Dell Inspiron 6000 Battery stated then for the first time that some of the alleged experiments can have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons.

As on the previous visit that ended in early February, Iran did not grant requests by the IAEA mission to visit Parchin — a military site thought to be used for explosives testing related to HP HSTNN-IB17 Battery nuclear detonations, the statement said. Amano called this decision “disappointing.”

The statement also said that no agreement was reached on how to begin “clarification of unresolved issues in connection with Iran’s Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery nuclear program, particularly those relating to possible military dimensions.”

The official news agency IRNA said the four-day air defense war games, dubbed “Sarallah,” or “God’s Revenge,” were taking place in Sony VGP-BPS2C Battery the south of the country and involve anti-aircraft batteries, radar, and warplanes. The drill will be held over 73,000 square miles (190,000 square kilometers) near the port of Bushehr, the site of Iran’s lone nuclear power plant.

Iran has held multiple air, land, and sea maneuvers in recent months as tensions increase, while at the same time continuing to deny any interest in nuclear weapons. It asserts that the Apple A1175 Battery allegations of secret work on developing such arms are based on fabricated U.S. and Israeli intelligence.

Over the years, theories about his identity had ranged from two separate men on the FBI’s Most Wanted List to a castaway from the Sony VGP-BPS8 Battery nearby compounds of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the polygamous sect run by jailed leader Warren Jeffs.

Other suspicions include computer modeling of a core of a nuclear warhead and alleged preparatory work for a nuclear weapons test and development of a nuclear payload for Iran’s Shahab 3 intermediate range Dell WR050 Battery missile — a weapon that could reach Israel.

Anti-aircraft batteries, radar, and warplanes will be involved in the maneuvers aimed at increasing coordination between the regular military and the powerful Revolutionary Guard in defending Acer TravelMate 6292 Battery sensitive facilities including nuclear sites, IRNA reported.

The unsuccessful trip was the latest sign of Iranian resistance in the face Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS Battery of international pressure to curb its nuclear activities, despite sanctions and U.S. and Israeli warnings of possible last-resort military action should diplomacy fail.

The IAEA team had hoped to talk to key Iranian scientists suspected of working on the alleged weapons program, break down opposition to their plans to inspect Dell Latitude D620 Battery documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.

His comments followed Iran’s announcement of war games to practice protecting nuclear and other sensitive sites, the latest military HP Pavilion dv6000 Battery maneuver viewed as a message to the U.S. and Israel that the Islamic Republic is ready both to defend itself and to retaliate against an armed strike.

Other suspicions include computer modeling of a core of a nuclear Toshiba PA3537U-1BRS Battery warhead and alleged preparatory work for a nuclear weapons test and development of a nuclear payload for Iran’s Shahab 3 intermediate range missile — a weapon that could reach Israel.

Beyond denying any covert weapons work, Iran insists concerns that it will turn its uranium enrichment program to making fissile warhead material are unfounded, saying it is Apple A1185 Battery enriching only to make nuclear reactor fuel.

Tehran’s expanding enrichment activities at its plant at Fordo, near the holy city of Qom, are of particular concern for Israel — which has IBM ThinkPad T60 Battery warned it will not let Iran develop nuclear arms — because it is dug into a mountain and possibly resistant to attack.

In the very near future, we may see batteries that can recharge in just three seconds. Researchers at MIT (where else?) have discovered a Dell Latitude E6400 Battery method of recharging lithium ion batteries at greatly increased speeds. The best news is that their method uses common materials and therefore could hit the marketplace in as little as two years.

Good Morning America reported Jan. 23 that the phone manufacturer Kyocera was voluntarily recalling batteries Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery for one of its phones, the first-ever recall of cell phone batteries. About 140,000 batteries custom made for the Kyocera 7135 Smartphone were recalled.

Though unrelated, the Kyocera recall came amid an investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission into cell phone batteries in phones Asus A42-A6 Battery made by various manufacturers. Over the years, investigators have found the suspect’s unattended summer camps, dozens of guns, high-end outdoor gear stolen from the homes and trash strewn around the forest floor.

Ford’s electric motors that power the hybrid vehicles have fared even better

The NHTSA investigation is expected to last months if not years so unless there is a sudden rash of EV fires, we can’t expect any major changes to be made to the industry but with more and more EVs planned to launch in the US over the next few years, we can expect that the NHTSA will devote a great deal of time to figuring out how to handle these vehicles after they have been damaged.

As of 2011, electric cars have been significantly more expensive than engine vehicles and even hybrid electric vehicles simply due to the additional cost of their lithium-ion battery pack. With the help of mass production of these kinds of lithium-ion batteries, battery prices are slowly coming down. As more locations make way for low cost electric car charging stations, these kinds of cars may become less expensive to drive.

“The success of the 2011 show proved that the battery industry is booming,” said Adam Moore, exhibition director. “Automotive OEM’s are demonstrating that the battery powered drivetrain is here for the long term; utility companies are touting that batteries are an effective solution for easing the natural intermittency of renewables; while portable device manufacturers are showcasing their ever-increasing power. Our exhibitors, delegates and visitors were amazed at the scale and value of the show; we see this as a reflection on the industry as a whole.”

While hybrids, plug-ins and electric vehicles are improving and developing rapidly, the improvements in the efficiency of gasoline engines are staggering. For example, the new Ford Escape essentially gets such a good efficiency rating with its two EcoStar four-cylinder engines, they are no long bothering with a hybrid version.

Almost daily on Torque News you will read about the aerodynamic improvements in this model or that, the weight reduction manufacturers globally are accomplishing, and even how 70 percent of the BMWs built in South Carolina are for export.

The simple fact is these changes have not been legislated, but rather the legislation, including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), follows the course of world progress.

With V2G technology, EVs that are plugged in support grid functions as they recharge their batteries. EV owners get paid for the use of electricity obtained from their cars. Gas engines are achieving efficiency levels in an SUV it took hybrid technology to produce just 5 years ago.

Ford’s electric motors that power the hybrid vehicles have fared even better, having been 100% trouble-free, according to Gray. “With nearly 190,000 produced, we have zero motor failures.” General manager of Yellow Cab taxi company in San Francisco has Ford hybrids in his fleet, and was surprised at how they’re holding up. “They’re incredibly durable. We have these taxis on the street for about 21 hours a day; we take them off from about 3am to 6am.” “The guys drive about 10 to 12 hour shifts – at about one-third of their previous gas consumption.”

Providing a single national cars program through 2025 provides the certainty required for companies to invest in new technologies in the U.S. that will make it possible to build more efficient cars and trucks. This, in turn, will stimulate the creation of good-paying jobs across the U.S to design and build advanced vehicles and all their component parts.

The auto industry employs 700,000 people in manufacturing vehicles and vehicle parts and many thousands more providing materials like steel, rubber, plastic, and aluminum that go into the vehicles we drive. This represents the single largest manufacturing industry in the United States. Since July of 2009, the automotive sector has added approximately 113,000 jobs, its strongest period of job growth since the late 1990s, much of this growth coming from manufacturers of vehicle parts.

Ford will be using this development data to introduce five new ‘electrified’ vehicles in the United States by next year. Joining the Transit Connect Electric commercial van which arrived last year, Ford will be rolling out the Focus Electric this year, and the C-MAX hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid next year with the new lithium-ion battery packs.

There are 25 eBox vehicles in circulation in America and in Europe, including the one Hanks drives. Most belong to research operations at universities, utilities and car companies, but some are privately held. The cars cost $55,000 to convert from mainstream Scion xBs after they’re bought new from Toyota, according to a Wikipedia report. The prototype eBox was unveiled in Santa Monica, Calif., on Aug. 18, 2006. They have a top speed of 95 mph and go from 0-to-60 in 7 seconds.

Ford, who will eventually bring hybrid technology to the forthcoming C-Max, has in the past imported most of its batteries from South Korea-based Compact Power, Inc. Thanks to a ARRA grant, they now buy batteries from Johnson Controls Inc., an advanced battery manufacturer in Michigan awarded a $299 million grant, creating 3,000 jobs as a direct result.

Similarly when General Motors and Nissan were requesting battery bids for the plug-in hybrid Volt and all electric Leaf, suppliers like A123, a Massachusetts manufacturer of lithium ion batteries, lost out because they lacked proven production capacity. Over the last two years, A123 has demonstrated its manufacturing capabilities, producing a lithium battery with a longer lifespan than the competition.

There’s no pleasure in Ener1’s troubles, but there is a lesson: Better to leave commercial financing decisions to private investors and bankers who are likely to take more care with their own money. Politicians write the press releases first and worry about the taxpayer losses later.

“After the disaster, the perception of electric cars is changing,” said Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors Corp., speaking at a panel discussion at IT trade show CEATEC Tuesday. His company provided 89 of its i-MiEV small electric cars to the Tohoku region, severely hit by the earthquake and tsunami in March, upon hearing that electric vehicles were in demand.

Mr. Masuko said at first he wondered exactly what help the i-MiEV, designed a small city commuter vehicle, could be in the devastated northeastern areas. However, he soon realized that many roads needed for trucks to refuel gasoline stations were blocked or damaged. But with power supplies restored relatively quickly, the electric vehicles were of great use to hospitals and local governments. “I think many people realized how important electricity is after the disasters,” Mr. Masuko said.

Ener1 attributed its financial restatement to the bankruptcy earlier this year of Norwegian electric car maker Think, in which Ener1 had invested, and with which it had signed a contract to supply batteries. Think had a long history of financial troubles and was hardly a safe investment.

Then again, Ener1 had to rely almost exclusively on Think after it lost its bid to supply batteries to Fisker Automotive, a battery-powered car maker which received a $529 million U.S. taxpayer-backed federal loan guarantee in 2010. Fisker chose to buy its batteries from a company called A123 Systems, itself the recipient of a $249 million U.S. Department of Energy grant (announced at the same time as Ener1’s grant).

“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” said Jim Federico, Chevrolet’s global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles. He said the coming car will complements the company’s growing range of extended-range electric and traditional hybrid vehicles.

But the March 11 disasters also exposed some troubling issues for the electric car industry. The nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant has seriously curtailed production of power using a technology that doesn’t emit greenhouse gases and, according to supporters at least, producers power more cheaply than by other means.

If as a result of the nuclear crisis Japan turns toward greater use of traditional thermal power plants to generate electricity, such as coal-fired stations, the net result is that electric cars may not be as green and inexpensive as previously perceived.

Still, both executives at the CEATEC panel shrugged off that view. The disasters made “all the people in Japan think about” future energy policy, Mr. Shiga said. That will increase demand for clean, renewable energy in the future, he said, and along with it electric cars will be able to help. “For instance, wind power can’t always generate the same quantity of electricity” as other methods, Mr. Masuko said. And in such cases, batteries in electric vehicles can be used as storage systems to enable stable power supply, he said.

Following on Solyndra’s great success comes Ener1 Inc., a lithium-ion battery maker also promoted by the White House. President Obama gave the company’s subsidiary, EnerDel, a shout out in August 2009, in a speech in which he announced $2.4 billion in grants “to develop the next generation of fuel-efficient cars and trucks powered by the next generation of battery technologies.”

The move marks a sharpening of parent company General Motors Co.’s turn toward electric vehicles as a way to tap into the growing urban-mobility market. As populations grow in certain cities, small electric cars begin to look more practical compared with traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Other makers from BMW to Nissan and Honda have also been developing cars to suit densely populated urban areas.

The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau began ordering temporary plant closures last month after routine back-to-school medical tests determined unhealthy levels of lead in the bloodstream of a small number of youngsters—and sparked a local outcry.

The Japanese electronics giant originally planned to invest a total of ¥100 billion ($1.31 billion) in two stages in the Suminoe plant in Osaka, western Japan, which makes lithium-ion batteries for use in consumer electronics.

GM has sold 5,003 Volts through October. The car is powered by a lithium ion battery and has an electric motor onboard to power the vehicle when the charge runs low. Lithium ion batteries are used in the Volt and all-electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Roadster.

Buyers of the Renault Fluence Z.E. will have the option of leasing a battery —instead of buying one with the car—as part of a monthly service agreement with Better Place. For a set monthly fee, drivers will be covered for whatever it costs them to charge their vehicle at home and will be able to swap out depleted batteries at a network of robot-operated service stations. The fee in Denmark, where the program will start, will range from €199 to €399 ($265 to $530) a month.

If you live in an area that sees heavy winter precipitation, consider rubber winter blades to avoid ice build-up and provide optimal clearing. Stock up on winter windshield fluid and keep a bottle of de-icing spray in your car to reduce the need to scrape. Check all vehicle lights to make sure your night vision is equally clear, and replace any dim or dead bulbs.

Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to a “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

Getting back to the update of the Fostoria clean-up, Tom Brown, vice president of both GAB and RAZE International who have been contracted by the city council to raze and clean up the Fostoria site, told the council members that recent testing of materials at the site was such that they can be used as fill at the site. He said, “Things are looking good, and there will now be a lot more progress made.”

City council members and the residents of Moundsville are now hopeful that the work of clearing the site will be completed within the next few months, and once this takes place, businesses will consider the site.

The weather was not very nice to two recently scheduled events planned at Grand Vue Park, and because of rainy conditions the children were handed out Easter Eggs rather than having the opportunity to find them on their own.

Bisset noted some of her customers are not just local. Some come from out of state. She claims to have customers come from as far as Georgia and Florida. She smiled, with amazement, at how many of her customers depend on her to supply and change watch batteries.

“We put in a lot of batteries in watches,” Bisset said. “I get people coming in every day now asking, who’s going to put my battery in my watch. That seems to be the biggest concern of people. One lady brought in 40 watches for me to put batteries in.”

“The American car from the mid-1930s to the end of the ’60s was a Chevrolet,” said John Heitmann, an automotive history professor at the University of Dayton and author of a book about the automobile’s impact on American life. “It was the car of the aspiring American lower and middle classes for a long period.”

Barry said he uses and recommends smoke detectors that are connected via radio signal. For example, if a fire is occurring on the second floor, the detector in that room will sound in addition to every other detector in the house. This is helpful, he noted, if one is in the basement and not able to hear an upper floor detector.

The Cameron VFD currently has a roster of 30 members. Walker said when he joined there was a waiting list because there was a maximum of 60 which could be on the department. The department still owns a 1946 pumper, which was used until the 1990s.

“We’re real proud of it,” Walker said. “It was just recently put into service. We got delivery on it in April and since then we have been training on it and it has been on display at fire apparatus shows around the country. It’s a big deal.”

The majority of drivers are aware of at least one scratch or chip in their vehicles’ paint. Unfortunately, many will not repair these small damages before they rust and become serious issues. A scratch can rust in just 30 days, and snow, ice and freezing temperatures can accelerate and intensify the damage.

“The thought of a breakdown, an engine not starting or otherwise being stranded is stressful as it is, but those things happening in freezing winter weather are extra stressful and costly,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “An investment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost and hassle of a breakdown during harsh weather.”

However, the shoe was on the other foot on Wednesday when, sitting in the office, our chairs began to move sideways and a rumbling sound could be detected as if a truck slammed into the building. For many, panic set in. Hundreds ran outside into the streets, not knowing what to do next.

Yet I have to side with some of those folks in California who called us out for our ineptness in handling the quake. On Wednesday morning we were earthquake rookies. By Wednesday evening, we were all earthquake experts , using words like seismic and temblor as if we knew what we were talking about.

While people like to theorize that records are appealing because of their cover artwork and liner notes, or the exciting variances in sound quality between record players, the truth of the matter is, there’s never been a better hard format for single songs than the 7″ record.

Many of the largest and most serious vendors (which include my customers) take space in hotels around the city. They do so because they want a quiet place where they can control the variables to show vetted guests sensitive things like prototypes of potential future products or finished versions of products that will be introduced later in the year.

So what did I do? I paired the tiny Zi8 with a rather large Rode VideoMic on a $16 handheld bracket from Best Buy. Yes, the combination of a regular-sized mic and pocket-sized camera makes everyone do a double take, but the results are extremely good, and the whole unit weighs just barely over two pounds. With the Quantaray QSX Digipro 100 tripod (which is unfortunately now discontinued) it still weighs under four pounds.

As Sinofsky explains, batteries can report their capacity using ACPI in terms of Watt-hours (W-Hr); and from now on, Windows compares this capacity against design capacity. “In Windows 7 we set a threshold of 60% degradation (that is the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity) and in reading this Windows 7 reports the status to you. At this point, for example, a battery that originally delivered 5 hours of charge now delivers, on average, approximately 2 hours of charge.”

That’s a fairly simple calculation to perform, and theoretically, it’s been there since the turn of the previous decade. But it would appear that the readings reported by batteries may only have become reliable enough for Windows to rely on this conclusion, in only the last few years.

In Betanews tests since Wednesday’s release, we encountered a series of related, and perhaps obvious, functional anomalies. Opera has its own mouse movement interpreter, created so that users can make “mouse gestures” without the use of on-screen buttons or gadgets. The browser can interpret a special gesture as a command. But when trying to do ordinary things, like move imported bookmarks to a toolbar, we noticed several inconsistencies.

Bonanni didn’t precisely say whether he believes the materials in a “typical laptop” are environmentally sound. But Adele Peters, a participant in this year’s Greener Gadgets design contest, clearly thinks she’s come up with a better alternative to the computer mouse that ships in the same box as so many desktop PCs.

Good UI design is often about human usage context, and understanding longstanding design interfaces requires some understanding of historical context. Buxton used the example of buttons on a woman’s shirt. He called the buttons wrong, because of their placement.

But why are they that way? Buxton explained that when buttons were introduced, women didn’t dress themselves. The buttons were correctly positioned for the person doing the dressing. Men dressed themselves, so the buttons are on the right, rather than the left.

Many folks tell me they don’t do anything with their browsers that requires any significant number crunching. The most direct response I have to this is: Wrong. Web pages are sophisticated pieces of software, especially where cross-domain sharing is involved.

They’re not pre-printed and reproduced like something from a fax machine; more and more, they’re adaptive composites of both textual and graphic components from a multitude of sources, that come together dynamically. The degree of math required to make everything flow and align just right, is severely under-appreciated.

How so? AMD’s singular pursuit of 64-bit x86 computing solutions allowed the company to develop a sizable market and mindshare lead. Though it initially dismissed Opteron, Intel eventually dove into the market with a vengeance and eventually left AMD in its wake. That point is worth remembering in still-evolving markets like mobile computing.

The new Atom platform demonstrates, yet again, Intel’s ability to effectively adapt to changing circumstances by leveraging its considerable intellectual and human capital. These gestures work well and should already be familiar to users of touch interfaces.

While the device is immediately recognized by machines running either Windows or Mac OS, it lacks all of the gesture-based functions without the associated Bamboo driver. Once the drivers are installed, however, the user can orient the Bamboo Touch as either a right-handed, or left-handed peripheral, and begin using two-finger up and down page scrolling, pinch to zoom, two-finger rotate, and left and right page flipping.

If you are a digital music maker and frequently go on sample-scavenging missions, you can pop a disc onto the battery-powered Revolution, tune your FM recorder to one of the available signals, and rip a sample right there on the spot with no wires whatsoever. I’ve done it, and it works.

If proper help does not come soon, the mothers and babies are in grave danger

Analysts appeared unimpressed. Late last Monday, Moody’s Investors Service downgraded the firm’s credit rating, citing both weak financial performance and its European bond holdings. The next day, the firm reported a $186 million loss, its fourth loss in six quarters.

“If proper help does not come soon, the mothers and babies are in grave danger,” Ms. Narkiewicz said. Each animal consumes up to 440 pounds of food a day, but the boats that could be used to ferry bananas, pineapples and sugar cane to them are busy rescuing stranded residents, she said.

Mr. Gupta’s day did not end with the Goldman meeting. He spent the balance of the afternoon on his numerous nonprofit causes, including a meeting with Julian Schweitzer, the World Bank’s head of health nutrition, and Raymond G. Chambers, the United Nations special envoy for malaria.

The biggest problems on the Continent center on how to wrangle the $600 trillion global derivatives markets. Negotiations have largely pitted Britain, which favors looser regulation, against France and Germany, which want stricter limits placed on markets.

France and Germany, two euro zone heavyweights, argue that only over-the-counter trades should be reported to central repositories that collect the data and be cleared through central counterparties. Britain, which handles 75 percent of such trading in Europe, says that would put London at a disadvantage to rivals in Paris and Frankfurt. Britain’s chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, has fought to extend regulation to all derivatives, including those traded on electronic platforms.

SAS Institute, the big-data software pioneer, announced last week that its software has been fine-tuned to work on the EMC Greenplum and Teradata high-speed appliances. The big private company had been working with Netezza as well, until I.B.M. bought the company. “We can’t share all our secrets with them,” Jim Goodnight, founder and chief executive of SAS, said in an interview.

The mayor and controller also announced that they were scrapping a decades-old tradition in which the city’s top investment manager was appointed by an elected official, the comptroller. Instead, that appointment will be made by the independent, less political board of directors.

The old way, Mr. Bloomberg explained, made it harder to attract top-notch investment managers — although he praised the city’s current chief investment officer, Lawrence M. Schloss, the former head of Credit Suisse’s merchant banking unit. Mr. Bloomberg said managers generally wanted independence and long-term appointments without being subject to political pressures and whims and without facing the risk of being dismissed as soon as their political sponsors leave office.

“Those people walked around with halos around them. Myths have been created on Wall Street. Nowhere is the myth bigger than at Goldman,” William Cohan, the author of “Money and Power, How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World,” a 658-page volume that explored the firm’s history and culture, said in an interview.

The Obama administration is revving up the nation’s digital capabilities, while publicly emphasizing only its efforts to defend vital government, military and public infrastructure networks.

“We don’t want to be the ones who break the glass on this new kind of warfare,” said James Andrew Lewis, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he specializes in technology and national security.

Mr. Corzine’s arrival at MF Global in March 2010 was meant to be a triumphant return to Wall Street and to bond trading after a long absence. Though it is has operations worldwide, MF Global has just 2,800 employees, making it a fraction of the size of Goldman or Lehman.

Throughout the weekend, regulators focused on completing a deal that would sell at least a portion of the firm, a move that would avert a messy bankruptcy. But given its relatively small size, the firm is unlikely to send shock waves through the financial system.

As the government rushes to protect some urban or industrial areas by diverting water from them, local officials have faced off over whose towns will be saved and whose will be sacrificed. Mr. Goodnight, 68, has been doing some of the research himself on software designed for in-memory processing and is a co-inventor on a few patents in that field.

In Ayutthaya, two groups of villagers are reported to have battled over a dike that protected one side and condemned the other. As the unlucky residents dug at the dike to send the water toward their neighbors, a gunfight broke out, wounding one of the villagers. In some places, according to news reports, troops have been deployed to protect the dikes.

The availability of these rockets, as part of the reinvigorated 2011 cross-border campaign, underscores again the potential value in more transparency in national and corporate data on arms manufactures and sales, and of publicly documenting stockpiles of arms around the world, and of underwriting the destruction of surplus military munitions wherever they are found.

There have been some rock solid BlackBerry devices in the past, but over the last couple of years the models I have used have disappointed me at times, in regards to stability. The main issue I have experienced with BlackBerry devices is a lock up/freeze where the device gives you the impression it is doing something in the background, but then that never changes and you have to perform a battery pull to get things started again. I still think this is one reason RIM continues to have removable batteries on their devices.

I am a major Windows Phone 7 fan and think people need to actually try one of these devices to appreciate how good it really is. The great thing about the existing lineup, like the Samsung Focus, is that they will get upgraded to Windows Phone Mango soon and that OS update is wonderful on the Samsung Focus.

Embedding an iPod in a smartphone was a brilliant move on Jobs part, setting the stage for the iPhone to become a household name. The iPhone was a device tightly controlled by Apple to insure it delivered the simple yet functional experience Jobs was insistent on producing, and sales figures show this was the absolute correct method.

Palm’s webOS (HP didn’t keep it going long enough to count in the name) has been quite stable, but still not perfect and I did experience a few random resets and freezes on my devices in the past. It does take a while for the initial sync when you setup lots of services, but I don’t count that as an instability.

There have been issues in the past with backup and restore failures though and when you are relying on the cloud for so much, this just cannot happen. I also experience weird double key entry issues, but that may have been due to the crappy webOS hardware, which in and of itself was a failure of the platform.

Sprint just recently released their first Motorola WiMAX device with the Photon 4G and it doesn’t disappoint with the latest version of Android (Gingerbread 2.3), 4.3 inch qHD display, 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, 16GB internal memory and microSD card slot, and 1700 mAh battery. This is one of the fastest smartphones around with some of the highest specifications on the market.

The original unibody MacBook constructed of aluminum in a thin form set the stage for the laptop sector as no single product before. The simple design was the epitome of Apple’s engineering, and set the stage for all of the thin notebooks on the market today. Apple pushed the limit for thermal engineering on such thin laptops, and the ability to put as much battery in a thin device as possible.

The MacBook Air is an evolution of that original design, and through careful engineering and control of the supply chain Apple has dropped the price point of these thin laptops to a highly competitive range. Competitors were already scrambling to make products that could compete with the MacBook Air on a design level, and now find they must do so on price at the same time.

Zero! That is how many times I have seen a reset on ANY Windows Phone 7 device that I have been using in over a year. During that time I have used at least six WP7 devices on all four wireless carriers. This includes running the early tech preview on the first WP7 device all the way through the latest RTM version of Mango I have on my HTC HD7.

I even have the Dell Venue Pro, with a 32GB microSD card in it, that has been rock solid stable even though I have read a number of reports of issues with that device. I don’t know if I have just been blessed with an uncanny knack for using stable WP7 devices, but from what I read online there are many more customers just as pleased as I am with the stability of Windows Phone 7.

The only issue I have seen on Windows Phone 7 is an occasional temporary freeze as many things are downloading at once, but I have not had to perform a soft reset or a battery pull on the devices yet. This only happened to me a couple times in the earlier version of WP7 prior to the NoDo and Mango updates.

Steve Jobs has been a stickler for taking lessons learned from products and using them in future products. Never has that been more evident than in the iPad, the tablet from Apple that single-handedly created a market for slates. Early critics of the iPad deemed it simply a large iPhone, but the brilliant vision of Jobs was that this was what customers wanted.

Apple aimed the iPad at the same target market that first bought the iPod by the millions, and then the iPhone. The strategy was a huge success, with tens of millions of iPads being sold in its short lifetime. Jobs took the phenomenal success of the iPod and released the iPhone, the most important product in Apple’s history.

Jobs was able to take the simple, elegant design to the masses, at a price that would keep the entire mobile industry scrambling to duplicate. No single competing product has made as much as a scratch in Apple’s iPad market over a year later, a testament to the brilliance of Jobs’ vision.

The recent release of OS X Lion by Apple incorporates design elements from the iPad, bringing mobile technology to the core desktop OS. It is clear Jobs sees the mobile aspects of the iPad converging with the desktop space, and early reception to the design elements in Lion show he may be right once again.

I get comments from readers that Windows Phone 7 is junk and think these people likely have never used WP7 or just have a hatred for anything from Microsoft. I have been getting more comments from readers that have actually tried WP7 and the majority of them agree that it is a very good mobile operating system that continues to get better.

One reason may be that the nation’s political leaders don’t see manufacturing as a problem

Relying on World Bank figures, some economists suggest that China moved into first place in manufacturing last year. Others say that based on measurements of actual purchasing power, the moment has not yet arrived but will come soon. It may seem remarkable that America’s fall – or impending fall – from first place in manufacturing isn’t generating all that many headlines, certainly not when compared with the controversies over the national debt or persistent unemployment.

One reason may be that the nation’s political leaders don’t see manufacturing as a problem. Put another way, they don’t necessarily regard making an engine, a computer or even a pair of scissors as having as much value as investment banking or retailing or a useful website.

“You have a culture within the elites of both political parties that says manufacturing does not matter, and industrial policy will do more harm than good,” says Ronil Hira, an assistant professor of public policy at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Attorney General Eric Holder said in May that intelligence retrieved from the compound in Pakistan where bin Laden was killed suggested that he wanted to harm people around the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

“As we head into the 9/11 anniversary weekend, we continue to urge the American public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities,” Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, said in a statement. “We take all threat reporting, including the recent specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information, seriously.

“Our security posture includes a number of measures both seen and unseen and we will continue to respond appropriately to protect the American people from an evolving threat picture both in the coming days and beyond,” she said.

The need to compete has led Microsoft for the first time to offer a Windows computer operating system that runs on chip technology from ARM Holdings Plc. The program is the biggest operating-system change Microsoft has made since Windows 95, Microsoft Vice President Julie Larson-Green said in June.

Windows 8’s design resembles Microsoft’s software for mobile phones in its use of digital tiles instead of icons to help users move between programs, according to the June demonstration by Windows President Steven Sinofsky on a 10.6- inch tablet computer.

Should the UN decide to go forward, Bloomberg said, it would expand an institution that’s already one of the city’s largest employers and create jobs. The Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo permitted the city to sell part of the one-acre playground in July.

If successful, the development entity, a party to the memorandum of understanding signed today, would lease space in the new building to the UN. The damage doesn’t end there. The intractable trade deficit is attributable in part to manufacturing’s shaken status.

“There are not many alums to begin with who have that connection with history and time with the school,” he said. “Until the time of his death, he was very free with his ideas on how to encourage students.”

And in many areas, craftsmanship in the U.S. has been eroding. Forty percent of the nation’s engineers work in manufacturing, for example, and that profession’s numbers have been declining. That is a particular problem because innovation often originates in manufacturing, frequently in research centers near factories, which aid in the creation of products and the tweaking of them on assembly lines.

As multinationals place factories abroad, they are putting research centers near them, with as-yet-undetermined consequences. At the very least, this trend challenges the view that the United States has the best scientists and research centers and is thus the research-and-development pacesetter.

Microsoft first released a version of Windows for tablet computers in 2002, though the devices used a stylus and had few programs tailored to the new form. Many were as large as regular notebooks and had similar battery life.

From China, Dow Chemical now exports products invented at its research center near Shanghai. “Overseas,” Liveris said, “I get tax incentives, and I get incentives to go to certain locations where they offer us utilities, infrastructure and land. I get access to human capital. I get all sorts of support to help train that human capital.”

He says vigorous government support, like the subsidies Dow receives for its solar roof shingle operation and the electric battery factory, might eventually halt manufacturing’s slide. But he adds that his company and others will not embark on a reverse migration, a significant “in-shoring” of what has already moved abroad. Too many consumers are concentrated today in Asia and Europe.

Harris said its H.264 Video Encoder transforms the MCP into a powerful media collection point that supports common routable interfaces while providing video capture, storage, and real-time playback capabilities. The 160 GB removable, solid-state hard drive provides ample storage for long duration video recording.

At the heart of the advancement is a polymer material that conducts electricity and binds closely to lithium-storing silicon particles, even as the particles expand to more than three times their volume during charging and then shrink again during discharge.

Exactly where the decommissioned 6.5-ton, bus-size Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite would land was not clear early Friday, NASA said. But 26 large pieces — the heaviest weighing about 350 pounds — were expected to survive the fiery re-entry and hit Earth’s surface, the agency said.

The PhantomIRxr, designated as AN/PAS-28, is the same state-of-the-art equipment that the U.S. Marine Corps has used since 2009 in the Medium Range Thermal Biocular program. The system has integrated image/video capturing capability, an integrated laser marker and utilizes the latest uncooled thermal imaging technology.

The system combines superior battlefield protection with new flexibility to protect forces and critical assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft.

Earlier this year, the ILES was delivered to a Lockheed Martin laboratory where it was evaluated for flight test readiness. Within the first two months at the lab, the ILES was able to power up a simulated PAC-3 MSE missile, check the missile’s health status and fire the missile batteries, MEADS said.

The Leader Radio offers a variety of input/output options to connect to external devices and serves as the core of the Harris FalconFighter — a modular soldier system that integrates C4 devices, sensors, networking components and power modules, Harris said.

“The Leader Radio provides commanders more capabilities in a smaller and lighter radio while maintaining the impressive range offered by the RF-7800S team radio,” said Andy Start, president, International Business, Harris RF Communications.

Ramirez hopped into a white Cadillac Escalade driven by his sister and was whisked away. A few minutes earlier, the Broward Sheriff’s Office released a tape of the 911 call made by his wife, 32-year-old Juliana Ramirez, from their sprawling home in the Ft. Lauderdale suburb of Weston.

Details on these and other findings are contained in a new industry study, which presents historical demand data for the years 2000, 2005 and 2010, plus forecasts for 2015 and 2020 by product and market. The study also considers market environment factors, examines industry structure, assesses company market share and profiles 35 US industry competitors.

Demand for lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries will be fueled by rapid growth in the production of hybrid and electric vehicles, which will utilize these batteries as a power source. Although lead-acid batteries will continue to account for more than 62 percent of secondary battery demand in 2015, sales of lithiumbased rechargeable batteries, which are widely used in both portable devices and hybrid vehicles, will record the strongest increases.

The Company assumes no obligation to update these forward-looking statements to reflect actual results, changes in risks, uncertainties or assumptions underlying or affecting such statements, or for prospective events that may have a retroactive effect.

Consumer applications will continue to represent about two-thirds of all primary battery demand in 2015. The aging of the population will also benefit supplies of both consumer hearing aid batteries and primary lithium batteries for implantable medical devices, as the number of people 65 years of age and older tend to be the primary users of these products.
